From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

The past few months have been a stressful time for my entire household, as our home has been on the market, with people streaming in and out almost every day.

It's taken a particular toll on our cats, and I've seen cat urine in some very unlikely places. I was happy, then to have an opportunity to test for review a special type of cat litter. Today's issue is dedicated to all those cats who have been victims in more ways than one, by a common urinary tract disorder.

FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder

FLUTD is the most common reason for cats' veterinary visits, and is a serious condition. In fact, if the urethra is blocked, toxins can build up in the blood stream, and death can result within 72 hours.

Litter box avoidance is a side effect of FLUTD, as the cat associates the pain of trying to urinate with the box. Learn more about FLUTD to help your cat avoid the pain and discomfort associated with it.

Cats' Urine pH Factor

It has become widely acknowledged that a cat's urine pH can be directly related to the health of its urinary tract. Since urinary tract problems constitute the #1 reason for cats' visits to the vet, it is important to understand more about the urine pH factor for cats.

Is your cat in danger of developing crystals in his urinary tract? How does his diet affect his urine pH? This article offers help in removing the mystery of the desired range of feline urine pH and how these numbers can correlate to a cat's urinary tract health.

Canned Cat Food

While a raw food diet is recommended by many experts, as most closely copying what a cat would instinctively eat, left on his own, raw is not practicable for many pet caregivers.

Canned food is a convenient alternative, providing its ingredients are not loaded with meat by-products. The chances of bladder crystals or bladder inflammation are greatly reduced with a canned or raw food diet, which both give the essential hydration needed for a healthy urinary tract.

Review of Perfect Litter Alert Specialty Cat Litter

This strange looking image is a picture of a clump of Perfect Litter Alert doing exactly what it was designed to do: serving as an early warning system of a possible bout of FLUTD, a potentially deadly condition of cats' lower urinary tract. I've seen this kind of pink clump of urine in a litter box twice in the past three weeks, which prompted urgent trips to my local veterinary clinic on each occasion, with a different cat each time.

On both occasions, Jaspurr, and then Jenny, was treated for idiopathic cystitis after their urine samples tested clear of bacterial infection or struvite crystals. Perfect Litter Alert works by measuring the pH of cat urine, which is somewhere in the range of 6.0 to 6.5. There is a color gauge on the litter box for comparison.
