From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

Christmas and Hanukkah have come and gone, and a New Year will be here by the time many of you have read this. Fireworks are inevitable on New Year's Eve, and I hope the ones at your home are on TV. Just to be safe, if you have party guests, keep the kitties closed in a quiet room. See you again in 2012!

Cat-Friendly New Year Resolutions for 2012

I've barely had time to catch my breath since moving into our new home on November 27th. The cats have settled in nicely, though, and each of them has staked out his or her territory, as cats will do. However, strangely enough, Jennifur and her old nemesis Jaspurr sometimes voluntarily share the same territory, as in this photo. One of my personal resolutions for 2012 is to continue to encourage them to live together peaceably, even though they may never be best friends.

Keeping Homes Safe for our Cats

Cat-proofing a home is not a one-time event, but should become an automatic habit, to be practiced daily. Too often in the past year, I have found a rubber band lying on the floor, or a sharp knife left carelessly on the counter or in the sink, as happens occasionally. In 2012 I'll practice what I preach and put my Habits to Practice for a Cat-Safe Home to use every day, and insist that the other human members of our home do likewise.

Take Time Out for Some Purr Therapy

In the hectic pace of the holidays, it is important to slow down now and then, relax with a mug of cocoa or a cup of chamomile tea, prepared with the ceremony it merits. While some may augment the moment with Christmas cookies, I prefer the non-caloric version of bliss: a warm, purring body in my lap. Nothing in the world beats purr therapy for release of stress.

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

The holidays are rushing by so quickly that it's breathtaking. Hanukkah started on Wednesday, Christmas is on Sunday, and New Year's is just around the corner.

I'm making much the same New Year's Resolutions as always, and I invite you to contribute yours. In the meantime, slow down, enjoy the season, and indulge in some purr therapy.

Dexter and Deb are nine week old newly adopted kittens. Although they have different purrsonalities, they are very close, and according to their adoptive Mom, they play hard and sleep hard.

Please Keep Your Outdoor Cats Safe in Cold Weather

Although it's still been warm here during the day, it is very cold as soon as the sun goes down, which is around 4:30 p.m., local time. While all my cats are toasty warm indoors, I've noticed some neighbors in our new community, leave their cats outside. The ASPCA sends annual reminders that cold weather can be a killer for cats that are for one reason or another, outside cats.

Although cats really belong indoors, many people feed stray cats or. . .Read more

Cat Picture of the Week: Shammy

Coindrummer and his wife Jo Anne adopted Shammy after she and her siblings were born in the backyard of their best friend known as "the Catlady." Shammy is now three years old, and it is evident that she is central to the couple's lives. Shammy is the third Cat of the Week for December, 2011, and her story first appeared in the Life With a Red Cat Show and Tell.

Cat of the Week: Alex
From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats
This Week's Cat
Alex
Alex is a healthy, well-developed white cat with stunning amber eyes. I liked the composition of this photograph. Alex is oblivious to his reflection in the glass, but is engrossed in something else above the window. Could it be a bird, or perhaps a spider?

More White Cats
February is the last big push of winter, and represents the glistening snow that blankets the budding crocuses beneath. You won't feel cold at all, though, with a white February cat to warm your heart and your lap.
