  • Dental Health Month
  • Spay and Neuter Month
  • A Fun New Feature About Our Favorite 4-Legged Beasties
While you're waiting, wrap your loving arms around one or more of those beasties. What a great way to start and end your day.

New FAQ About Cats' Heat Cycles

photo of mother cat with kittensAdrienne had not spayed her female cat, nor neutered the cat's five month old male kitten. She asked if it were true that the cat would not go into heat as long as she still had one of her litter. She also wanted to know if the kitten would try to mate with its mother.

While I appreciated that Adrienne was concerned enough to want to learn the truth, a lot of misconceptions needed to be cleared up. Please read my reply.

11 Wildlife Dangers to Cats

One of our favorite forest creatures is the raccoon, such as the youngster pictured above. He is one of a family of five who visit several nights a week, looking for peanuts, which I provide for our bluejays. However, I am always conscious, that, cute and appealing as they are, raccoons pose certain dangers to cats. Learn more about raccoons and cats, as well as the other creatures who comprise 11 wildlife dangers to cats.

Cat Picture of the Week: Karamel and Rhapsody

Photo of two kittens
Image © Guest Kathie R.

Kathie's husband runs a warehouse, and they rescued Karamel and Rhapsody from there, along with their siblings. They found good homes for the other kits but chose to keep the two boys as family members. Although the kittens were not adopted from a shelter nor from a cat rescue group, in this case they qualify for Cat Picture of the Week honors, since their adoptive humans did indeed rescue them. Now that we have three Cat Pictures of the Week for January, You can see all of them in the new 2013 Cat Pictures of the Week Picture Gallery.

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

I can hear a sigh of relief that I'm finally letting go of 2012 now that we're halfway past January already. My cats are happy too, as I finally took down that stuffed Santa who Ho Ho Ho'd and played Jingle Bells every time I opened the front door.

Bigger and better things are coming, dear readers, so fasten your seatbelts.

2012 Events and News About Cats

Photo of Caboodle Cats
Photo Credit: © ASPCA, Used With Permission

To those who either admired the innovative "rescued cat village" called Caboodle Ranch, or abhorred the practices if its owner, Craig Grant, the shutting down of Caboodle Ranch and the arrest of Craig Grant on felony charges made a huge impact on our memories of 2012. Other memories may be fabricated of strictly fun stuff, such as several new iPod games for cats and their humans to share. And of course, our own cats' illness or passing will place on or near the top of the list. My readers are also invited to share your own memories by using an easy form. Your comments on my blog are also welcome.

7 Ways We Bond With Our Cats

Longtime cat lovers may know of more than seven ways we bond with our cats. An immutable link among people who love cats is our lifelong bond with cats. In fact, that bond is so strong that it lasts beyond life itself. One of the strongest ways this bond presents itself is that our cats provide us with therapy when we need it most. In fact, cats are being used more and more lately as therapy animals in hospital settings, such as nursing homes. Learn more of the ways we bond with cats.

Of Cats and Mice

Cats and mice can make a deadly combination. What else did your cat bring home, along with that mouse he so proudly presented to you? Romeo brought home Toxoplasmosis, a zoonotic disease. Unlike most cats who are exposed to that virus, Romeo became very sick, and his medical bills have mounted into the $thousands since then. The toxoplasmosis led to uveitis, which in turn led to glaucoma, leaving Romeo blind in one eye.

In addition to toxoplasmosis, that little rodent...read more.

Cat Picture of the Week: Maisie

Photo of young kitten

Maisie, this week's Cat of the Week, was a cute kitten of about 15 weeks old, according to the shelter where she was adopted in October 2012.

Another older kitten in the house, Mitzi, now has a feline companion to keep her company - living proof that two kittens are better than one. Maisie is an affectionate, playful kitten, and everyone is happy that she is no longer caged in a shelter. You can read more of her story on her personal page in the Show and Tell gallery featuring Adopted Shelter Kittens.
