From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

A year ago today, I posted that my (now) 10 year old cat, Joey, had been diagnosed as hyperthyroid. The initial plan was that we would give him Tapazole (methamiazol) pills, the standard treatment to start with for hyper-t cats. A lot has happened in the year since then.

Have a great week with your BFF (Best Furry Friends), and I'll be back next week with much more.

Review: The Complete Cat's Meow

When I purchased this book, I expected excellence, since I knew of Darlene's reputation as an author and as a pet expert, but what I found when I read it was superb writing. Darlene is not only a good writer, she's a darn nice person to boot, friendly, caring, and witty. Her book conveys her personality, so that readers don't feel as if they are being lectured to by an expert, but as if a friend is helping them learn more about taking care of cats.

The Complete Cat's Meow was the undisputed winner of the 2012 Readers' Choice Award for Books about Cat Care. Read my full review of this book.

Cat Picture of the Week: Maggie

Maggie is such a beautiful girl - she looks very much like a Maine Coon cat. Maggie looks older than her years (10) because she had to have all her teeth extracted due to infected gums - an unfortunately common problem with older cats who lacked routine dental care. Kathy, who adopted her two years ago, was unaware of Maggie's health problems. Her veterinarian discovered her severe dental problems and the fact that she also suffers from CRF (chronic renal failure.) Although it took a short time for both of them to acclimate to the subcutaneous fluid treatments (Sub-Q) to help Maggie's kidneys, they are both fine with it now. Maggie is happy, healthy, and well-loved. Read more of her story, then share your own special needs cat.

This exquisite photo shows the true beauty of Stinky, belying his name. I'll forgive his owner, Paul Gill, Guide for Internet for Beginners, because I know he loves his cat dearly, and the feeling is mutual.

Cat Age: How to Help Your Cat Live Longer

We who love cats want our cats to live as long as possible, since they are members of our family. Although genetics may have an effect on how cats age, there are many things we can do to maximize our cats' life potential, starting when they first come under our care.

If you conscientiously follow these four building blocks, you will have gone a long way toward ensuring that as your cats age, they will enjoy life to its fullest. They will be well nourished, healthy, and happy, knowing that they are spending their life with the person they love best in the world. And you can rest secure that you have done all you could possibly do to accomplish that. That's all we can do, after all, isn't it?

Serious Cat Diseases Emerge on Both Sides of the Atlantic

From my email this week, I received news of two serious cat diseases emerging:

In the U.S., "Bobcat Fever," Spread by the Lone Star Tick. Routinely infecting bobcats and mountain lions, Bobcat Fever is also infecting cats allowed outdoors. The disease is so deadly that traditional treatment only has a cure rate of 25%.

In Scotland, and possibly other nearby countries, a mysterious "Robotic Cat" illness has struck older cats, causing them to walk with a strange gait.

Read more on what scientists have discovered about these two serious diseases.

So Your Cat is Pregnant: What's Next?

Perhaps you were a little slow in spaying your kitten and before you knew it, she was seven months old-- and pregnant. Perhaps you are working with a rescue group and this is your first fostering experience with a pregnant cat. Where do you go from here? It's decision time. Should you allow the condition to continue, or can she be spayed? Certainly, it's unsafe and unwise to allow a kitten to bear more kittens. Your decision will be based strongly on both the age of the cat and the stage of the pregnancy. Please read the full article for more information.

If your veterinarian cannot or will not spay your cat, I urge you to enroll in my Care of a Pregnant Cat email course. It's completely free, but don't be surprised to see mentions of spay & neuter in some of the lessons. It's the responsible thing to do.

Cat Picture of the Week: Tatiana

To look at Tatiana's picture, you'd never know that she has FeLV (Feline Leukemia) She was a scrawny kitten and full of fleas when Nuria Rodrigues rescued her from a colony of stray cats she feeds, a little over a year ago.

Cat of the Week: Rufus
From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats
This Week's Cat
Rufus
"Rufus should have been named "Rapscallion" because he is such a character. He loves to climb trees, no matter how tall, and tease us to come and get him down when he requires no assistance," says Sherry, Rufus's enthusiastic human companion.

December Red Cats
Join us in extolling the virtues of the Red Cats for December, but don't be surprised if some of them appear to be yellow or orange. Why are yellow cats called "red?" Beats me, but maybe a geneticist can explain it. In the meantime, cozy up with your cat by the fireside. They're all beautiful, no matter whether you call them "Ginger," Marmelade," yellow, orange, red, or "flame."
