Plan a Stress-Free New Year's Eve for Cats

New Year's Eve is just a few days away, and along with the 4th of July, it's one of the most stressful dates for cats. If you're having a party, a good practice is to keep all your cats in a bedroom with a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door. Play some music for the cats, and if there's a television in the bedroom, try one of the videos made for cats, such as the Mewvie Birdland Bonanza to keep them occupied.

I hope you are not having fireworks. They will only add to the cats' stress and are outlawed in more and more municipalities every year. I usually...read more

Cat Talk: Elevator Butt

I've had a lot of bonding time with Billy lately, to the degree that he'll plant himself next to me on the arm of the sofa and "present butt," for me to scratch. The more I oblige, the higher his butt rises, which is proof of Amy Shojai's description of "Elevator Butt."

According to Amy, cats' offering their butts to sniff is a huge compliment offered to only trusted friends. I feel so honored. Read more of Amy's wisdom about Elevator Butt.

Who Put the Nip in Catnip

A catnip toy or even a recycled sock filled with catnip can be a fine distraction from the noise of loud music, strangers talking in the other rooms, or even the fireworks found in some neighborhoods on New Year's Eve.

Is your cat crazy over catnip? Not all cats are, and often kittens are slow to succomb to its attraction. Vote in this ongoing poll, then compare your vote with the others.

Why Cats Groom Themselves So Often

New Article Hot Off the Press

Want a sure cure to tension? Many cat lovers are fascinated by watching their cats groom themselves. It relaxes me so much, I can almost purr.

There is much more involved in the subject of cats' self-grooming. For instance, several studies are ongoing on the topic of saliva, both human and animal: whether it has antiseptic properties or not. If you're of an investigative nature, try observing your cat(s)' washing habits: how often a day they occur; any particular stimulus; what do they do afterward; who else do they groom. I've found that observing my cats' habits seems to tighten our already strong bond, and understanding is knowledge gained. I'll be looking forward to seeing the stories my readers will report. Feel free to add your comments here.

Seasonal Safety Reminders for Cats

Christmas trees are traditional for many families, but when families include cats, we need to keep their safety in mind when decorating the tree.

Yes, the holidays can be a challenge when you have a cat in the family, particularly a rambunctious kitten. But with a little judicious planning and a healthy application of common sense, you and kitty can not only survive the holidays, but enhance the enjoyment for the whole family.

How Cats Love

Photo of a cat bearing giftIt may be puzzling to learn that some of the ways cats show their love might cause us to think just the opposite.

For example, your cat's propensity to claw the arms of your favorite chair is actually a way of demonstrating his love for the person who sits in that chair, according to Amy Shojai, CABC, former Contributing Writer on cat behavior for this website. The photo shown here is of a cat bearing gifts for his favorite human. Now that's more like it, but what if that gift is a pungent dead catfish, like my Bubba used to leave on the floor next to my side of the bed? That sounds like mixed messages to me, but perhaps not.

Cat Picture of the Week: Captain

photo of red cat lounging in a cat bedCaptain is a handsome six year old red cat, who was adopted from an animal shelter at the age of three. His was sort of an "accidental adoption," as Kim's intention when she visited the animal shelter was to adopt a Beagle dog. The poor doggie turned out to be sick, but after Captain turned on his attention-getting display both times she passed his cage, they both won and he became her happy, devoted cat. Kim recommends having pet health insurance to help cover those unforseen high-ticket veterinary procedures. Great advice - great cat parenting!

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

One of the best ways I've found to avoid holiday burnout is to perform an act of kindness toward someone with no expectation of thanks. That's what the feature article is about today.

The next-best holiday "feelgood" for me is to sit underneath a blanket of cats and count my blessings. Enjoy the season, dear readers. Although it will soon be over, let's carry its goodwill in our hearts year-round.

Holiday Help for Needy Cats

photo of brown tabby cat If you are like me, your own cats probably have all the toys, treats, and goodies they need. The good news is you can buy them another toy or two and help to benefit a homeless cat, at the same time. Many both profit and non-profit organizations have programs wherein a portion of your purchase goes toward an animal charity. For example, a new squeaky cat toy for my Jenny will help donate money toward the needy cats Best Friends Society Supports. SFSPCA Macy's Holiday Windows Needs Volunteers

For 26 years now, the San Francisco SPCA has held the SF SPCA Macy's Holiday Windows adoption center in the Macy's store in San Francisco. Last year, 325 cats and dogs were adopted through that event, but a recent email disclosed that this year adoptions are lagging.

A call has gone out for volunteers to help guide interested adopters and encourage the sidewalk "browsers" to come in and get hands-on experience with the adoptable cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens...learn more

Cat Picture of the Week: Sunny

Take a beautifully sunny cat with a disposition to match, combine him with a warm and loving woman, who finds him in a county shelter and brings him to his forever home, and you have the perfect match for this week's Cat Picture of the Week.

Sunny has lived in Barbara's home for about a year now, and from all indications, neither he nor Barbara could be happier. Barbara says that Sunny is the life of the party. She wrote, "He is the bouncy, energetic young one who slightly unsettles the middle-age cats, but always brings a smile to our faces. Such a joy!" It is this kind of attitude that turns cats from pets into family members, and Sunny fits the bill.
