I so enjoy getting notes from my readers, but often can't read them because my spam filters delete everything with "No Subject," so keep that in mind when emailing me. If you find this newsletter helpful, please forward it to another cat lover, or send them the link below.

Have a safe and happy 4th, U.S.A., and cuddle some cats in the meantime.

4th of July Survival Kit for Cats

The 4th of July, Independence Day in the U.S., is the most traumatic day of the year for cats. If you live in the U.S., some people tend to forget the meaning of "Independence Day," but concentrate their celebration on "bombs bursting mid-air" and barbecues. For your cats safety, please take these tips into consideration as the holiday approaches.

My veterinarian tells me that the 5th of July is the busiest day of the year for shelters - no doubt because of the number of pets running away in fear. But hopefully, this year in my new forest-surrounded home, the loudest thing my cats will hear on July 4th will be the sound of deer munching the hay we provide.

Subcutaneous Fluids (Sub-Q) for Cats

Caring for a cat with a serious, chronic disease, such as Feline Diabetes or Hyperthyroidism is an important part of caregiving, and its importance can reach the critical stage quickly when dehydration enters the picture. Such was the case with my Shannon, afflicted with FIV, compounded by CRF (Chronic Renal Failure) toward the end of his 19 years on earth. Giving him Sub-Q fluids along with tube-feeding for his anorexia were among my last loving acts for him.

Subcutaneous fluids may be necessary for cats with conditions other than CRF. Learn much more about the causes of dehydration in cats, how to tell if a cat is dehydrated and about Sub-Q fluids for cats.

Cats' Health Quiz

How extensive is your knowledge about cats' health matters? Do you know common symptoms of health problems in cats and what they might mean? Take this javascript-based cats health quiz to test your knowledge and learn more about your cat's health.

This quiz contains 15 multiple choice questions, and there are no "trick" questions, however, read the questions very carefully, as some of them call for selecting the least correct answer. A correct answer will send you to the next question in the quiz. An incorrect answer will divert you to a page with the correct answer and links to articles you can peruse later on the question topic, as well as a link to the next question. Enjoy!

Cat Picture of the Week: Wilson

Sometimes a cat seems destined to live with a certain human. No one can explain the cosmic forces that come into play, but this truth comes into play with regularity. Such was the case of Wilson, an eight year old cat in the infirmary of the San Diego Humane Society, with an upper respiratory infection. His intended human companion, Philip, saw his photo on the humane society's website, and was drawn to visit the shelter the next day. It wasn't long before Wilson became a feline member of Philip's household. See more of Philip's Cat Picture of the Week story.

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

Happy Summer Solstice, dear readers! Actually, there was some controversy over the date this year, but to me, June 21st is always the first day of summer.

We're Starting off this week with a fun new article, a couple of recaps, and a bonus two-pack of adopted shelter Cats of the Week.

Have a great weekend, stay cool, and this week, try to fit in a few of those activities your cats love the best with the purrson they love the best.

Top 10 Things Cats Like

It's no secret that cats love to play, are very fond of eating treats such as catnip and bonita tuna flakes, which we jokingly call "kitty krack." But what do you think is your cat's most favorite activity of all? Eating, sleeping, or maybe water play with the kitchen faucet? One of my cats' favorite "hobby" is bird-watching. Take a look at the Top 10 Things Cats Like, and compare your cat's favorite form of fun with the list.

Cat Picture of the Week: Henry and Max

Although she had always been a dog person, when "Enana" moved across the country to be close to her children and grandchildren, she found herself adopting Henry, a black kitty who was in danger of euthanasia because of his color, according to the shelter workers. And the minute Henry saw her, he stood up and put his paws on her shoulders. It was obviously love at first sight.

A year later, she and her granddaughter adopted Max to complete their family. Read more about Henry and Max's story on their Cat Picture of the Week page, and learn how to submit your adopted shelter cat story.

This Week's Cat
Billy
It is rare that I use my own cats for the photo of the week series, but Billy is such a personable little guy, and I thought my readers would enjoy this photo of him with a couple of his little "friends."

More Photos of Cats and their Pets
Cat lovers all know that a cat is the sole owner of his or her household and every living being who resides in it. The typical cat will look at the household dog and think "Mine!", which should surprise no one.

Enjoy these photos submitted by readers of cats with their "pets," then submit your own photos of cats living in harmony with the pets they love, using the information requested in the Photo Guidelines. Please use "Cats and Pets" as the subject of your email.
