June is Adopt-a-Cat Month

June has been set aside for several years to encourage the adoption of shelter cats

In my experience, adopted shelter cats and cats from rescues make the very best lifelong companions. Shelter cats may be facing a death sentence, or languish in a cage for months on end. The odds are in favor of the cute kittens, but while they may readily find homes, the older cats are often left in the shadows.

They may be the ones you'll see gazing forlornly from the back corner of their cages, or sometimes thrusting a hopeful paw through the cage bars as you pass by. Let's all pitch in to help make the adoption of shelter cats go viral!

What is the life span of the common cat?

A strong genetic background for longevity can't be discounted. Given proper care, nutrition, and regular veterinary visits, a cat kept indoors can live as long as 21 years or more. (The average age of cats is 12-15 years) This is, of course, barring any serious medical conditions or untimely accidents. This is, of course, barring any serious medical conditions or untimely accidents.

Cats allowed to roam freely outdoors as a rule don't live as long...read more

Preparing Your Cats for Disaster

According to the National Hurricane Center, this is Hurricane Preparedness Week. Since it is human nature to panic during a disaster, such as an earthquake, hurricane, or fire, it is important for us to prepare ahead with a plan for evacuation, needed supplies, and the knowledge we need to act quickly. We and our cats may even need to evacuate our homes, and it is important not to telegraph our fears to our feline compions. Learn more about preparing your cats for disaster to help keep your cool when you most need it.

Top 10 Summertime Tips for Cats

Summer is right around the corner, and the local weather mavens predict temps in the high 90s all week in my new neighborhood. My cats are all indoor cats, and quite comfortable watching the birds outdoors through the windows, and we plan to make our "gazebo garden." both cat-proof and predator-proof, with special fencing.

Cats do not get a vacation from the dog days of summer, and they need your help to keep summertime annoyances at a minimum. Learn how to keep your kitty comfortable, cool and safe during the year's hottest season in the northern hemisphere with these tips for summertime comfort for cats.

Cat of the Week: Hatul
From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats
This Week's Cat
Hatul
Hatul, I'm told, is Hebrew for "just a cat." But this Hatul is much more: a psychologist and dog groomer, as well. From the photo, I think he needs just a tad more training in plant maintenance. Such a cat!

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

The top news of this year for pet owners has been the Diamond Pet Food recalls, which I'll be tracking with a brand new article. One request: Please don't write to me with questions about specific foods. The best and quickest way is to call the Diamond Foods Consumer Contact: 866-918-8756

Please pass this newsletter on to a fellow cat lover, or send them the link below to subscribe.

And as always, love on your cats this week. Even in the best circumstances, they're with us for only a precious short time, and we're their everything.

The Anatomy of Pet Food Recalls

Pet Food Recalls foment feelings of fear, panic, sorrow, and hundreds of questions from dog and cat caregivers who are worried about their pets. My heart sinks whenever I get an email notice of a new pet food recalled, not only for my own cats, but from the knowledge that researching to keep on top of it will have to take priority over everything else. One of my fears was realized with the most recent Diamond Pet Food Recalls, when it appeared my own cats had been affected, as will be explained in the linked article.

Want to Write About Cats?

Nope, About.com Cats isn't up for grabs yet. But my readers are a gifted group, and from some of the emails I've received, I suspect many of you would love to write professionally about.cats. There are many paths to take to attain that goal.

I've put together a short tutorial, for those with ambition to write, but no professional experience. It is linear in structure, and covers writing, publishing, and marketing books about cats, starting with the basics: grammar, vocabulary, and even crossword puzzles. Did you know that crossword puzzles are an excellent way of increasing your vocabulary?

Believe me, writing about cats is a wonderful, ongoing journey, and I've learned as much about cats from listening to my own cats and my readers as I've imparted along the way. I hope you will, too!

Reasons to Adopt an Older Cat

Due to the failure to spay and neuter, the constant influx of kittens into our society increases the severity of our ongoing cat overpopulation problems. Hundreds of thousands of kittens end up in shelters, which are already overcrowded. Many of the kittens find homes, at the expense of older cats who have been waiting in vain. However, in "kill shelters," more of these kittens are either euthanized, or older cats are sacrificed to make room for the "more adoptable" kittens. Even in no-kill shelters, the vicious cycle continues as this year's kittens become next year's older cats.

Read the reasons why you should consider adopting an older cat in this pictorial article, and also learn why you should spay and neuter your cats.

Cool Cat Photo of the Week: Chow Now!

Prince is a five year-old tuxedo kitty who was adopted at a PetSmart adoption day event when he was six months old. He obviously lucked out in his forever home, from the joie de vivre he is showing from his chosen place in the sun, so typical of cats. Doesn't it almost make you wish you could curl up right next to him? Prince's full story and full-sized photos can be seen on the Tuxedo Cats Show and Tell feature.

Cat of the Week: Cat of the Week: Naimph

Cat of the Week: Naimph
From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats
This Week's Cat
Naimph
I chose this week's photo because it depicts beautifully the "take charge" attitude so prevalent in Torties - so much that I've often seen it referred to as "tortitude." Naimph is also a particularly beautiful example of the glowing colors found only in tortoiseshell cats.

More Tortie Photos
November is for tortoiseshell ladies, because they are cloaked in the lovely colors of fall. Let's take a stroll through this rainbow of November beauties, each one reminiscent of a pile of maple leaves glowing in the crisp fall air.
