Giving Thanks for Cats: Silky

Silky is an eight-year old neutered male tuxedo cat. He came into Jobinky's life about six months before her mother's death, and gave her the kind of comfort she most needed. They obviously have the kind of relationship that only cats and humans can share: an unbreakable bond.

Your Cat's Behavior: How to Find Help

Two years ago, I created a User Answer section on Behavior Problem Success, reasoning that readers who had successfuly solved cat behavior problems could share their experiences, thus helping other readers with similar problems. The section has been successful; however, to date, posts ASKING FOR HELP with their cats' behavior problems have outnumbered those from helpful readers sharing their success stories. I can no longer fight the flow, and have now opened this section to those asking for help.

However, because it is not a threaded discussion format, questions will eventually be buried in the flow, and unless you visit the page daily, you might miss the answer (as others will miss your question). I'd strongly suggest taking the following steps first:

Thyroid problems?
Nov 19th 2011, 11:36

Hi

I have a 12 year old cat, his been very healthy all his life never got sick once, he is now an indoor cat for the past 8 years or so. Latley he lost some weight and now he seems to want to eat and drink all the time. He doesn't seem unhappy or any loss in coordination or anything else just that he skinny and eats all the time. I was away in the states for 3 months which my mom said he got very sick than like he was depressed and refused to eat for like a week. But than got better and put some weight on now he seems to have lost it. I am very worried and I dont know if it maybe is a thyroid problem or something else? We can't afford to bring him to vet right now, I am a full time student, and my parents are not financially stable either. Any ways on bringing up his weight? what kind of food to give him and such, his always had wet and dry. I will be getting more income in the new year but right now I am not able to afford the 130 dollar blood test or any other exam he might need. I live in Ontario Canada.

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

I'll likely still be unpacking in my new home on Thanksgiving, so no big meal nor guests this year. However, we all know that the food is not what Thanksgiving is all about. Rather, it's the day we give thanks for all the bounties of our lives. As with most of my readers, my cats will have a prominent place on my list, along with my human family members who won't be there.

Facebook | Twitter

Human Food for Cats?

Certainly a sliver of turkey or chicken from your dinner plate won't kill a cat, but you're helping him develop bad habits by feeding him table scraps. Since Thanksgiving is just a little over a week away, it's not too early to start thinking about how safe or not those ingredients in your sumptious dinner will be.

You may have forgotten that the gravy slathered over your Thanksgiving turkey used broth that was flavored with onion, among other things. Learn a number of other reasons why giving cats human foods is not a good idea.

Top Ways to Have a Cat-Safe Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of the year. It's an occasion for spending time with family and loved ones, and for giving thanks for the bounties life has given us. For many of us, those bounties include the richness of life shared with our fuzzy feline family members. I hope by now most readers are aware of the potential hazards of feeding their cats scraps at the Thanksgiving Dinner table. Colder weather and the fall and winter holidays, such as Thanksgiving, pose other unique problems for cats too. You're obviously thankful for the companionship of your cats. Now you can learn how to keep your cats safe at the time of Thanksgiving with these tips.

Thank Heaven for Cats

November holds the time set aside in the United States for reflecting on the things in our lives for which we are thankful, and my cats are always pushing at the top of the list. Here, then is my tribute to some special cats I'm thankful to have known, on the occasion of Thanksgiving in the U.S.

Read my tribute, then post your own thanks for your cats.

Helping Allergic Guests Through Thanksgiving Dinner
Next Thursday is Thanksgiving, and you may very well have guests for dinner who are allergic to cats, which could cast a pall on the whole day.

Cat dander is the culprit in allergies to cats, whether the reaction be wheezing, sneezing, or breaking out in hives. Not a pleasant prospect in any case for you or your guest. Whether you're allergic to cats or your friends are, this article might bring you some relief.

Pictured here is our big red guy, Jaspurr. He's a love, but packed with nasty dander allergens.
