I hope this new book review is worth the wait. I'm currently reading its prequal, The Dalai Lama's Cat, which I will review in February.

And speaking of February, that's the month devoted to white cats. Since I've received no new white cat Show and Tell entries this year, I created the poll featured here. While 59 people  (79%) voted a resounding NO, apparently none of them have white cats.

Don't forget Valentine's Day is coming soon. Let's also make February Hug-a-Cat Month, since we all  know how much they love and depend on us.

Review: The Dalai Lama's Cat and the Art of Purring
Photo of book coverWhen I received an offer to review two of David Michie's books, including an advance copy of The Dalai Lama's Cat and the Art of Purring, I eagerly accepted. Since The Dalai Lama's Cat and the Art of Purring was the latest in the series, it is reviewed first.

Rinpoche (pronounced rin-po-SHAY) is an unforgettably beautiful, cat, with a vocabulary which would challenge many humans, and the book is filled with almost every emotion we know, but mostly love and acceptance. I've dubbed the book a "timeless classic" in my review, and I happily stand by that assessment.

Poll: Cancel Cat Pictures of the Week?

I'm seriously considering cancelling the Cat Picture of the Week series. Why? Because for both January and February, there has been little, if any response to my requests for the corresponding Show and Tell pictures. As of today, the latest white cat Show and Tell photo I've received is from November, 2013, after the cat's death in October.

It would be a shame to discontinue this series, which has been around from at least 2005.The photo shown here is Frodo, who was one of the Cat Pictures of the Week for 2005 However, it does consume a considerable amount of time,. . read more and vote in the poll

February is Pet Dental Health Month

While February is officially Pet Dental Health Month, the effects of gingivitis and periodontal disease in cats can be so far-reaching that, actually, every month should be dental health month.

According to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by the age of three years. With that knowledge in mind, I was horrified when I recently took my two kittens for individual vet appointments, and found that Sage at nine months, and Gaither at almost seven months both have dental disease. Sage has indications of early stomatitis, and Gaither has gingivitis. Since...read more

Top Things a Cat Needs for Survival

I wrote the list of Top Things a Cat Needs for Survival almost six years ago, but it is as true today as when I first wrote it.

Certainly, most cats can "survive" without all the things on this list. However, my goal is not only to help my readers' cats survive, but to allow them to thrive.

Next week, you can expect a new review of a delightful novel about an unforgettable cat, along with some interesting news about the way cats age. In the meantime, it's cats and kittens back to the vet for me. Thank goodness for pet health insurance!

February, coming up soon, is Spay & Neuter Month, Cats' Dental Care Month, and of course Valentine's Day. We also feature White Cats as our Cat Pictures of the Week. Have a wonderful week until then!

Toilet Training for Cats?

Several years ago, guest writer Lin Komula wrote an article for this website, Toilet Training for Cats VS Kitty Litter. Judging by the number of votes in the accompanying poll, this was an interesting subject.

Lin  shared her reasons, along with an analysis of the types of cats (and cat owners) for which this type of training might work. Kitty Melodee, aka Mel, has been successfully toilet trained for years.

Your Kitten's First Year

Your kitten's first year is the most important year of his life. His physical development and personality will mold during this year and will set the stage for his adult years.

It has been mentioned before that kittens are not simply miniature cats. Their development into adult cats is a fascinating process, and each step of the way a kitten is in a unique place in life, especially his first year..

I'm determined that by March 15th, my cats' veterinary needs will be all under control, although they will still need medication for chronic conditions. That is the least I can do for their many years of love, companionship, and trust.

January Cat Pictures of the Week Nag: The entries are still just dribbling in, and some forms do not show the kitten's name anywhere. I can publish a "No Name" Adopted Shelter Kitten Show and Tell, but I can't select that one for Cat Picture of the Week. #shelter kitten nag

Is Your Cat a Secret Drinker?

When I called my vet last week about Joey, the last think I expected to hear her say was, "It could be that Joey is a secret drinker." What the--?"

We had taken Joey to the vet a few days earlier, as we were concerned that he had not been eating enough and that it appeared the he was becoming dehydrated.  Dr. Jamie had given Joey IV fluids, and sent us home with the remainder of the fluids for subcutaneous drip, along with a tube of antibiotic ointment for  conjunctivitis. Dr. Jamie's comment about cats as secret drinkers made perfect sense once she explained. To learn more about secret drinker cats and about cats' need for water, read "Is Your Cat a Secret Drinker?"

7 Ways We Bond With Our Cats

Longtime cat lovers may know of more than seven ways we bond with our cats.

An immutable link among people who love cats is our lifelong bond with cats. In fact, that bond is so strong that it lasts beyond life itself. One of the strongest ways this bond presents itself is that our cats provide us with therapy when we need it most. Even the smallest thing, such as the way feel of a purring, vibrating warm body under a hand at night can bring on sleep, is therapy in the way only cats can give.

Let's examine the 7 ways we bond with our cats in more detail. I suspect many readers will be murmuring "yes!" as the story unfolds.

How, Why, and When to Train a Cat

Perhaps your cat has started to pee outside the box, and you are beside yourself. Or maybe your sofa is starting to look shredded and threadbare, and you're embarrassed when visitors come by. Yelling at the cat isn't doing anything, and squirting the cat with a spray bottle doesn't work, nor does rubbing his nose in the pee.

You're not alone. Many cat lovers have faced similar problems - this writer included. Fortunately, help is at hand.Take a look at Cat Training - How, Why, and When to Train a Cat. Then check out the huge compilation of cat behavior and training material available right on this Website.

Review: "Cat Daddy," by Jackson Galaxy

"Cat Daddy" was published in May of 2012, and still receives plaudits from a number of cat lovers, including other writers of cat books. .

It is almost unfathomable to picture the heights Jackson had to climb to drag himself out of the morass of sex, drugs, and rock and roll he once lived with. I sincerely doubt that fame was Jackson Galaxy's motivation for the work he does. Yes, it's a nice incentive, but I sincerely believe that Jackson's motivation is to help the cats of the world live in a much better place. He's that kind of man - a nice man - and I, for one appreciate all he is doing for cats.
