From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

We'll already be in April by next newsletter time. April features Special Needs Cats, and I hope to see more Show and Tell submittals of those very special cats. My Shannon, pictured in the feature article, was a special needs cat, with FIV and CRF. A dear friend once told me that Shannon didn't know that he was sick, which helped a lot.

On the lighter side, I have also featured kitten Gaither, in a michievious moment of toilet paper snow. He didn't know that he was being naughty, either. Food for thought until we meet again next week.

When an Older Cat Cries all the Time

Have you ever had a cat "put to sleep" to relieve him or her of constant pain? I know this is a painful topic for cat lovers, but sometimes when an older cat cries all the time, it isn't necessarily from physical pain.

You see, older cats may cry out loudly for reasons having nothing to do with pain. In Shannon's case, senility could very well have been the cause.  It's much too late to second-guess my decision that night almost thirteen years ago, but the things I learned while researching for the featured article may help me in the future when and if such a decision must be made again.

Is My Cat Happy?
Amy Shojai, CABC, wrote this article almost four years ago, and it is just as true today as it was then. Cats show their happiness vocally, by their body language, and by their grooming and eating habits, among other ways. Learn more about the ways cats show their happiness with this excellent article.

The Mating Game

Accidents sometimes happen, and despite our best intentions, yesterday's female kitten has suddenly developed hormones, slipped out,  and met up with several feline Don Juans. Before you even suspect it, she has mated and conceived, and soon you'll have a kindle of kittens on your hands.

Like other cat advocates, I strongly urge that pet female cats be spayed as early as possible. Once a female cat reaches puberty,  estrus cycles will start. It's the season, folks, so learn more about mating in cats and why spay and neuter is so important..

Tempting Toilet Paper Party

At the rate our Gaither enjoys TP play, with the cost of toilet tissue, I’ll soon go bankrupt.

Photo of Kitten Gaither Playing With Toilet Paper

Ahh, but who can stay upset with a kitten who has so much fun playing all by himself. His joie de vivre is contagious, and I almost feel like joining in. As well as playing by himself in my son’s bathroom, Gaither enjoys being my little “bathroom buddy” in mine. He loves to stand up on the toilet seat and pull all the towels off the shelf above, or try to climb the shower curtain. Do you have any furry bathroom buddies? Post their stories on the Bathroom Buddies Show and Tell page. Don’t forget the photos!

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

I've heard that some writers just skim a book prior to reviewing it. However, I think if a publisher or author entrusts me with a free copy of a book, I should read the whole thing. Such was the case with our featured review today.

Speaking of the whole thing, I'm experiencing exactly that today with Spring, even if it's one day early. I'm loving the birds and bees, and flowering trees, but--- oh-oh! SNEEZE!

Review: Paw Prints at Owl Cottage

Paw Prints at Owl Cottage, by Dennis O'Connor, is such a captivating book that I read it through twice before starting to write a review. Then I read his first book, Paw Prints in the Moonlight, because Toby Jug, from that book, figures so prominently in "Paw Prints."

Photo of Book Cover Paw Prints at Owl Cottage I'm really not a fanatic about reviewing books. However, Dennis O'Connor's writing is so rich with passion, humor, love of his cats, and detail that I didn't want to miss anything. His writing has often been compared to that of James Harriot. As I recall, the similarities are: the natural, easy writing styles, and their honest love and support of all our world's creatures.

Spring Brings: Sunshine, Surprises, and Sneezes

Along with sunshine, flowers, and trees blushing with blossoms, Spring brings all sorts of welcome and not-so-desirable surprises to those of us with cats in our homes, such as allergies, even for those cats who rarely go outdoors unless supervised.

For those of us humans with allergies, cats shedding their winter coats bring out sneezing, coughing, asthma, and other allergic symptoms brought by courtesy of cat dander.

Top Picks Canned Cat Food

With two new kittens in our family, and new health concerns they brought with them, it is increasingly important that all our cats receive the nutrition they require for optimum health. These foods were selected for generally sound nutrition value, and not for specific health conditions, nor for the growth needed in kittens. You can do no harm by converting your own cat(s) to canned food from dry.

Cat Picture of the Week: Jennyanydots

This week's Cat Picture of the Week is a lovely, colorful tabby girl who was adopted with her littermate brother as tiny kittens.

As often is the case, her adoptive parent was also the fosterer of her pregnant momcat, who chose to adopt the tiniest girl kitten and the only boy. The world of cats is blessed by these fosters and rescue groups who take pregnant cats off the streets, find homes for their kittens, then have them spayed to help reduce the overpopulation of cats.

I thought it would be fun to center this week's newsletter around one topic, and what could be more fun than playing with our cats, or watching them play. But guys, you'll learn quickly that hands are not toys. Those kittens grow up quickly, and they can do serious damage with those claws when they're a bit bigger.

How to Play With Your Cat

“Oh brother!” I hear muttered from the corner of the room. “As if I need lessons on how to play with my cats. It comes with the territory, right?”

Photo of Cat Jaspurr Playing in his Box SledPerhaps it does. But if your idea of play is down-on-your-knees, rough-and tumble play, such as you’d engage in with your labrador, perhaps you’d better read on a bit.  Please read on to learn more about how and why cats play.

7 Ways to Stop Play Aggression

I learned long ago not to walk around barefoot with kittens in the house. From Amy Shojai, former Contributing Writer: “Cat aggression and cat attacks may be either predatory or play aggression, and look identical. But when the kitten grapples your bare feet and chomps down, it’s anything but fun and games for owners.

You may suspect Fluff-Baby has turned into Demon-Cat, but truly, this is normal kitten behavior and he’s not channeling his “inner lion” and planning to eat you. Learn more about play aggression with kittens.

Stopping Water Bowl Games

Amy Shojai, former Contributing Writer on Cat Behavior, fielded Ask Amy questions regularly. Brittany was troubled by her 5 month old Harley who constantly splashed all the water out of the bowl, which she shared with Ripley. Since water play is normal at Harley's age, Amy suggested redirecting to an approved activity. She wrote:

"Rather than trying to stop the behavior, it's most effective to redirect it to a legal outlet." Read the rest of Amy's very creative solution to a very common problem. Also browse more Ask Amy articles.

Top Toys for Home-alone Cats

Bored cats can sometimes become mischievous cats while trying to entertain themselves. Fortunately, there are several toys that can help keep them occupied when they are home alone, and stimulate and challenge their curiosity and intelligence.

Be sure to alternate toys to stimulate interest, and don't forget the "freebies!"The photo at right depicts Billy and Joey playing with their Peek-a-Prize Toy Box.
