From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

Yikes! Where is this year going? By next week's newsletter time, it will be August, the month when Domestic Cats (my favorite "breed") will be featured as Cat Pictures of the week. A lot more is in store, so grab your favorite kitty and hang on for the ride. If you enjoy my newsletters, please pass it on to friends, or give them the link below.

Personalities of the 12 Favorite Cat Breeds

Each of us has a favorite cat breed. Mine, like many of my readers and friends, is the Domestic cat, not officially recognized as a breed, but popular enough to be included in the Personalities of the 12 Favorite Cat Breeds.

Domestic cats' personalities are as varied as their color patterns, because their personalities are determined by so many different factors. Conversely, purebred cat personality types are an important part of their breeding. Learn more about the Personalities of the 12 Favorite Cat Breeds with this brand new article.

The Wild Look in Cats

Like so many other cat lovers, I have always been fascinated by cats with the "look of the wild;" cats such as the Bengal, the Egyptiian Mau, and the Ocicat. Sensing that I am not alone with this fascination, I put together "The Look of the Wild," for my readers to enjoy.

If you long for the look of the wild in your home, but believe, as I do, that the big cats belong in the wild, one of these domesticated breeds might give you the best of both worlds. Cat Picture of the Week: Phoebe

Some lucky rescued cats fit into a household immediately, others, such as Phoebe, third Cat of the Week for July, take awhile longer. Phoebe spent her first week or so after being rescued, under the bed, only sneaking out to eat when no one was around, or when she was dragged out to use the litter box. Once she came out to stay, she didn't waste time establishing herself as the Alpha cat, to rule over her two older sisters.

Read more of Phoebe's story.

Caboodle Cats to be Offered for Adoption

Mark your calendar for Saturday and Sunday, August 11 & 12, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. On those two days, hundreds of cats rescued from Caboodle Ranch, will be available for adoption by ASPCA & Jacksonville Humane Society. Some of these cats have special needs, including barn cats and those that are FIV+ or have feline leukemia. Read more for further details.

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

It's been a wild and crazy week, with triple digit temps, and I had a wonderful and welcome surprise this morning when huge raindrops fell on my deck outside while I sat there with my morning wake-up O.J.

I hope your week ahead will be wonderful, if not wild, so give your kitties some huggles from me. You might also consider passing on this newsletter to friends, or give them the link below.

Cat Personality Types

How much do you really understand about your cat's personality? Is he an Alpha cat, or shy and withdrawn? Is she mercurial, so you don't know from one minute to the next whether she will be outgoing and playful, or quiet, almost to the point of being depressed? My new article, "The Feline Personality," might shed some insight to these questions.

Preparing Your Cats for Fire Emergency

This past Sunday was National Pet Fire Safety Day, a timely event for personal reasons.

I recognized the need for updating my article on disaster preparedness as a result. I encourage my readers to take a proactive part in readying your vehicles as well as your cats, for possible emergency evacuation, in case of flood or fire. Learn more.

Help the Feral Cats in Brevard County, FL

Yesterday, Alley Cat Allies posted an open letter to the Brevard County Board of Commissioners, calling on them to honor their original dedication 13 years ago to support TNR as the only effective way to curb the population of feral cats in their area.

Complaints from neighbors of the feral colonies precipitated a situation that threatens the TNR program, a dispute called "property rights vs animal rights by one board member. Read more...

Cat Picture of the Week: Coco

Our second Cat of the Week for July is Coco, another sumptuously beautiful calico girl. Coco was dumped in a box in front of a pet store, having just given birth to kittens. The irresponsible person who left her there couldn't be bothered with her, but a local rescue group could, and LucyB, her adoptive mom definitely could.

Lucy describes her Coco as lazy, but quite vocal and demanding of her way, and that she loves to eat - so much that they're watching her weight after having a diabetes scare. Read more of Coco's story, and if you have a calico girl with a great story, you can post your own by following the link.

Review: Earthborn Holistic Primitive Feline Cat Food

Fresh off the press, a new full review of a dry cat food previously unknown to me: Earthborn Holistic Grain Free Primitive Feline Cat Food I recently purchased a small bag for Jenny, and wanted to share my findings with my readers.

I can tell you right away that my cats love the taste. But then, they also love the taste of the canned "supermarket brand" they sometimes get as a "treat." Will I be feeding this food to my three overweight cats? Would I recommend this food for my readers' cats? Learn more with my full review.

Hemingway (Polydactyl) Cats

Whether called "polydactyls" (latin for "many digits"), "Hemingway Cats," or "Mittens," these many-toed cats warm the hearts and hearths of those people fortunate to share a home with one. Ernest Hemingway was an amazing man, with many talents and interests. He is best known by the world for his many novels and short stories, many of which were released to the silver screen as movies. His last book was "The Old Man and the Sea," written in 1952, for which he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. He is known to the world of cat lovers for his love of cats, because he admired their spirit and independence...read more

PBDEs and Feline Hyperthyroidism

What the heck are PBDEs? They are polybromonated diphenyl ether, used as flame-retardant in dozens of household items: carpet padding, upholstered furniture, and electronics. More importantly, they have been found in the lining of cans used for packaging moist cat food. What the heck do they have to do with hyperthyroidism in cats? A 2007 study by environmentalists found ... Read more
