Greetings from my netbook. Due to a hard drive failure on my PC, I have lost access to all my longtime email contacts and my entire email list for the past two years. If you are awaiting a reply, please shoot me a quick email so I can put you in my address book. Be advised, however, that it may be some time before I can reply to you.

Meanwhile, if you enjoyed this newsletter, consider forwarding it to a friend. And a reminder that our next newsletter comes on the 4th of July. Please keep those precious kitties safe that day. They'll thank you. I'll thank you.

Review of Cat Amazing Puzzle Toy

The Cat Amazing puzzle toy is somewhat similar to the Peek-a-Prize, which I reviewed several years ago.

When the President of Cat Amazing contacted me a few months ago and told me about this puzzle toy, I figured "why not?" but decided to purchase it myself, since it was a fairly inexpensive toy, plus it gave me a place to store all those cat toys littering the carpet of my home office. One of my favorite pastimes is watching my cats to see the way their intelligent minds work, and the Cat Amazing gives plenty of opportunity for that. You could almost call it the "classic IQ test for cats." Read my Full Review, to decide it this would be an appropriate toy for your own cat.

Why Cats Groom Themselves So Often

Want a sure cure to tension? Many cat lovers are fascinated by watching their cats groom themselves. It relaxes me so much, I can almost purr.

Often when cats are not grooming themselves, they are washing other cats with their rough, barbed tongues, and even grooming the humans they love. It can be amusing to see a cat racing wildly all over the house, then suddenly stop, lift a hind leg in the air, and meticulously lick each hair of his inner leg. A typical behavioral pattern then is to find a place to curl up for a cat-nap. Makes me sleepy just to think of it. Learn more about cats' grooming habits.

Veterinary Care for Cats

Veterinary Care for Cats is the first part of a multi-part Cat Health 101 Online Course, which will eventually be additionally offered as an E-Course. Our cats deserve everything we can possibly do to ensure them optimal health, and a regular plan of veterinary care is critical to that goal.

This first lesson consists of eight separate parts, and covers aspects of cat health care from kittenhood to senior years. To help ensure your cat's continuing health, be sure to read, then bookmark Cat Health 101: Veterinary Care for Cats.

Cat Picture of the Week: Kit and Molly

Today's Cat Picture of the Week is a twofur, as Kit and Molly share the spotlight with their Adopted Shelter Cat Debut.

To longtime About.com Cats Forum members, PhillysMom is known as Pat H., and few of us will forget Project Jersey Kitties, which was the saga of the "barn kittens," in 2008. Pat is a huge advocate of cat rescue, and would not dream of breeding cats when there are so very many waiting to be rescued or adopted from shelter. Kit and Molly, pictured here, are a great example. They were adopted from their vet's small rescue center as youngsters, and now, six years later, are part of Pat's furfamily, which also includes Philly and Piper (one of the barn kittens). Read more of Kit and Molly's story, and find out how to submit your own adopted shelter cat's photos and story.

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

This week's newsletter is dedicated to the memory of Omar, who was the GuideCat for Alissa Wolf, About.com Guide to Pet Shops, and a dear friend. Alissa is a huge supporter of shelter cat adoption, and encourages her readers to host shelter and rescue cats in their shops rather than "Kitten Mill cats."

Lots more in the weeks to come, so please keep coming back. And any broken links this time, please email a reply to this newsletter.

Cat Dads Celebrated This Week

Photo of man with catI was blessed for over 50 years by living with a man whose love for cats was infectious. My children all inherited that passion for cats, and since his passing in 2008, our son, Lance has taken over as the cat dad in our home.

Although you'll see the phrase everywhere nowadays, I believe I was the first one to coin the phrase, "Real Men Love Cats," many years ago. I don't really care that others use it now; it's a message that should be shouted from the rooftops, to help dispel the old fallacy that "real men love dogs. Only women and sissies love cats." What kind of guy, then, is this man who loves cats?...Read more

How to Find a Lost Cat

To a cat lover, one of the scariest events is when a cat is lost. However, there are a number of ways to find a lost cat. I've had to put these steps in practice in a number of occasions over the years - one reason my cats are now indoor-only.

For many years we have looked for cat tracking devices that would actually work. I found out just yesterday that... Read more

Natura Pet Products Recall

From the FDA: June 18, 2013 - Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling specific lots of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Natura manufactures a number of products for both dogs and cats, and every dry food line has been affected with expiration dates prior to 6-10-2014. The dry cat foods included are: EVO (pictured here), California Natural, and Healthwise. Although only one single lot during a routine testing showed the presence of salmonella...Learn more.

Cat Picture of the Week: Ricky

Photo of adopted shelter cat

Ricky is a lucky cat in two ways: first, because he was 10 years old when Barbara adopted him. Senior cats often are overlooked in favor of kittens, a shame because they have so much love to give for the remainder of their years. And second, because after he was adopted, she reasoned that he would be happier if he had a feline companion, so she returned to the SPCA and adopted Skedaddles, a seven year old female cat. That is the kind of person Barbara is, and I wish all the best for the three of them for a long, long time.

There is still plenty of time left to submit your own cat to the Adopted Shelter Cats Show and Tell section of my website. Who knows? Your kitty could receive Cat Picture of the Week honors too.

Managing the Care of a Diabetic Cat

photo of my cat, Billy
Image © Franny Syufy

It has been over a month since Billy was first diagnosed with diabetes. During that time he was also diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, confirmed with an electrocardiogram. My veterinary bills for this period have been almost $1,500, and I'm waiting to see how much of that my VPI Pet Insurance policy will reimburse.

So far, I have converted my three male cats to a low carbohydrate canned food only diet, and recently started supplementing it with a mixture of partially raw chicken thighs and a commercial raw food supplement. I add a bit of low sodium chicken broth and mix it all up into a sort of kitty soup, and the boys thoroughly enjoy it. If Billy's next blood tests do not show substantial improvement, insulin injections will be inevitable. In the meantime, Billy seems to feel much better, and plays almost as hard as he sleeps.

Who Put the Nip in Catnip?

That most cats go crazy over catnip is no secret. All four of our cats, from Jenny to Jaspurr, find their "kitten within" when presented with a new catnip toy or a recycled sock filled with catnip. It's sort of like the old "chicken and egg" conundrum. Did catnip get its name because cats are so nuts over it, or did they fall for the oldest marketing ploy in the world? Read the article, then vote in the ongoing poll.

Attention Seeking Behavior in Cats

Cat caregivers sometimes complain about "behavior problems," when there are physical reasons for some of those problems. One example is a cats excessive vocalization: loud meowing or crying, sometimes accompanied by other attention-seeking behavior. Because causes for these behaviors can be either physical or emotional, or both, you need to do some homework on possible causes, so you can help your cat with his distress.

Learn more about the various reasons for attention-seeking behavior in cats, and how you can help them.

Cat Picture of the Week: Chloe

Photo of White Cat Chloe

Chris Piwowarski is a shelter volunteer, and naturally adopted Chloe, our Cat Picture of the Week, from a shelter after losing her 13 year old cat in 2008.

Chloe is a special needs cat, and although Chris did not elaborate on the nature of her special needs, it could have something to do with her beautiful eyes, as blue-eyed white cats are often deaf. One thing is for sure: Chris and Chloe are bonded, and Chloe is a very lucky cat to have found such a loving forever home.
