For those of you who read this on Thanksgiving, check out the "Cat-Safe Thanksgiving" link toward the bottom. If you have a large number of guests, perhaps the cats can be confined to another room for their safety.

My wish goes out to all my faithful readers, for all the blessings of this day.

Red Cats Featured in December

For many years, this website has featured a different color or class of cat each month, and December has always been set aside for honoring red cats as Cat Pictures of the Week.

Photo of red cat GarfieldI've made it no secret that red has always been my favorite color for cats, and for many years, there has always been at least one "Sunshine Boy" in my home.              Photo Credit: © Grace Lock, About.com Guest

Why Do Cats Seek Attention In Bathrooms?

This is one of the most masterfully crafted FAQs I've ever read, and it's hard even now to keep a straight face while writing.

Marie seriously asked:"Dear, wise, cat whisperer, I have a very burning question that has never been answered to any form of satisfaction. Why do all my cats (and my friends report theirs, too) love to be in the bathroom with me?

If I walk into the bathroom and sit down, even if I am not using the facilities, they literally line up to come visit me. They bring their brushes and toys and leg wrap and 'talk'. They want to be...read more

The Outdoor Cat

The indoor-outdoor debate has gone on for decades, especially with vehement assertions that cats are inherently killers of wildlife. While for several decades my own cats were indoor-outdoor cats, coming in at night. Today, they are mostly indoors-only, primarily for their own safety, with some outdoor options during nice weather.

Learn more ways of allowing your cats safe access to the outside.

Chronic Renal Failure in Cats

Although more common in senior cats,  Chronic Renal Failure, aka Chronic Renal Disease, or CRF, has been diagnosed in cats as young as five or six years old. It is a serious condition evidenced by gradual, irreversible deterioration of kidney function over a period of months or years.

The news isn't all bad, though.  Learn more about CRF.

OCD in Cats

Activities such as grooming are not only common in cats, but necessary to keep their coats clean and free of debris. Cats also use grooming as a relaxing diversion, such as when they have just committed a feline faux pax, such as just missing the target in a jump. It is only when the grooming becomes incessant to the point of hair loss, that grooming becomes an obsessive-compulsive behavior. Find out more about OCD in cats.

Carpets and Allergies to Cats

For many years it has been believed that carpeting in homes with cats can exacerbate symptoms of allergies to cats, because carpeting attracts and holds cat dander, along with pollen and other allergy-inducing substances.

Most of us believed that therefore, bare floors, such as wood, linoleum, or tile, were superior to carpeting for those reasons. However, world-wide studies on carpeting . Read more
