From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

First, apologies for the missing Thursday newsletter. Unfortunately, my sidekick, Mongo (my HP), suffered a near-fatal event last Monday.

While Mongo is conscious again, I'm still in the process of recovering all my necessary software and files. Therefore, I'm asking my readers to refrain from sending questions by email. The above link gives alternatives. Also, if you need to unsubscribe or change your email address, there is a self-service link at the bottom of each newsletter. See you again at the usual day and time, next Thursday. And love on those kitties in the meantime. We mean the world to them, you know.

Joey's Heart Scare

Nine year old Joey was diagnosed with Hyperthyroid Disease in April of 2011, and when he became allergic to tapazole pills (methamiazol), the most common treatment for hyperthyroidism, he underwent radioactive iodine therapy, a procedure our Bubba had also received sometime before his death in December of 2005.

Prior to the I131, Joey had several blood tests, including an NTproBNP test for possible HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). The results of that test, confirmed by an ultrasound, indicated... read more.

Animal Groups Focus on Rescue during Hurricane Sandy Cleanup

Best Friends turns the spotlight on Alley Cat Allies for their model project of 13 years with the Atlantic Boardwalk Cats, who are flipping their tails in disdain for Hurricane Sandy as they return to the boardwalk again. A resident reported that he talked to a guard who said when the eye of the hurricane passed over, a line of 25 feral cats casually strolled single file back to the boardwalk...read more.

LA Bans Pet Sales in Stores

Best Friends Animal Society is exultant about the news that the City of LA is effectively becoming a no-kill city by banning the sales of commercially bred dogs, cats, and rabbits from pet stores in Los Angeles. I'm sure my readers are familiar with the terms "puppy mills" and "kitten farms." That is the kind of commercially bred pets in question. In the future, all pets sold in pet stores in that city will be those from shelters and rescues brought there for "adoption day" events, much as Petsmart and other large retail pet stores have done for years.

Elizabeth Oreck, Best Friends' national manager of puppy mill initiatives said that the ordinance will not affect responsible, hobby breeders... read more

Why do cats sometimes act so crazy?

A reader had an overwhelming curiosity about why almost all cats sometimes act so crazy. She was referring to the idiosyncratic way that some cats engage in the behavior my family has always described as "going ballistic."
