Fading Kitten Syndrome

When we first adopted our Billy, pictured here, he was underweight to the point of emaciation, had a URI (upper respiratory infection), and was generally in poor physical shape. Had Billy really been just a few weeks old, as our vet estimated, he would have been a prime candidate for Fading Kitten Syndrome, which targets kittens from birth to about 12 weeks.

Most of us who have never worked in the rescue of pregnant cats or kitten fostering, have never heard of fading kitten syndrome, aka FKS. Really, a label is all that Fading Kitten Syndrome is. It isn't a disease, per se, but a collection of symptoms, as are all "syndromes." Learn more about fading kitten syndrome, and file it away, even if you currently have no kittens. It may come in useful some day.

Loss in the World of Cats

Almost all of us have known the pain of losing one of our own family cats. Those memories give us the compassion to help friends when they experience similar losses. But in the world of cats, there are a number of different kinds of losses that bring us sorrow. One of them is the loss of a good friend or loved one who also was a fellow cat lover. It doesn't much matter if we knew them "in real life," or if we'd only been friends through our Internet connections, and/or by phone.

Other losses in the world of cats include Loss of a Cat Because of Finances, Loss of Cats in Shelters, and loss because of our Shattered Illusions This last one may be hard to understand, until you consider the recent events surrounding Caboodle Ranch. There are more kinds of Losses in the World of Cats than I have listed here, and your comments are welcome here discuss them. Shared sorrow is sorrow diminished.

Cat Picture of the Week: Matariel aka Matis

Matis is a sweetheart of a cat. It's no wonder, because Matis came into the home already "pre-loved." He was chosen at the animal shelter when his mom was still there, pregnant, and she must have been a beauty too, because David wanted one of her kittens. It's easy to see that he has David's number.

Read more of Matariel's story and if you are lucky enough to have a tabby too, submit photo and story to the Life With a Tabby Cat Show and Tell.
