From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

I should apologize for the alarmist headline of today's newsletter. However, anyone who has ever experienced the panic of rushing a sick or injured cat to a Vet E/R hospital late at night in an unknown area will immediately understand. I'm prepared now for the worst-case scenario and I hope my readers are too

If this week's newsletter is helpful to you, please forward your copy to a friend, or give them the link below. And hug your cats while you can. They're with us for such a comparatively short but treasured time.

Lost and Scared? Think GPS

Tuesday a friend and I were emailing stories about frantically rushing sick cats to an emergency vet clinic we'd never visited before, especially at night. It happened to my husband and me late one night shortly before we lost our Bubba, and it's possible the delay in his receiving treatment may have led to his demise.

Barry's email was quite timely, because just yesterday, we had a scare with our Billy. Fortunately, it was during our local vet's regular hours and we were able to get him seen within 25 minutes of our frantic phone call. Dr. Bailey examined him and drew blood... Learn more.

Stress-Related Health Issues

Tuesday I wrote about our Billy's sudden illness which necessitated a quick visit to our local veterinarian.

Later yesterday I got the results of the blood tests, which gave cause for concern in several areas. Without sharing all the test results, they indicated the possibility of diabetes, IBD (which he had been previously diagnosed with), and pancreatitis. However, Dr. Bailey... Read more.

Kitten Food for Kittens

Although some cat foods are advertised as "formulated for all life stages," it is my opinion that the quality of nutrition in a kitten's diet for the first year can set the stage for his health throughout life.

For optimum growth and development, kittens need extra protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals to get the right start in life. The extra protein is needed for developing strong muscles and supporting tissue; fat is essential for fatty acids, as a carrier for fat-soluble vitamins, and for the additional calories for energy, Learn more about the advisability of Kitten Food for Kittens

Cat Picture of the Week: Jonas

I always like it when we have room in the month for five cats instead of four. And Jonas is just in time for the last Cat Picture of the Week for March, 2013.

Although there are other cats in the family, Jonas is the first one John has ever had who is a lap cat. Perhaps Jonas intuited that need when he first saw John come into the Humane Society and chose his new human parent. John advises potential parents of tabby cats to prepare yourself to be worn out at the end of the day. I can vouch for that, being the proud mom of four tabby cats as well as a sassy tortical.
