From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

One of the best ways I've found to avoid holiday burnout is to perform an act of kindness toward someone with no expectation of thanks. That's what the feature article is about today.

The next-best holiday "feelgood" for me is to sit underneath a blanket of cats and count my blessings. Enjoy the season, dear readers. Although it will soon be over, let's carry its goodwill in our hearts year-round.

Holiday Help for Needy Cats

photo of brown tabby cat If you are like me, your own cats probably have all the toys, treats, and goodies they need. The good news is you can buy them another toy or two and help to benefit a homeless cat, at the same time. Many both profit and non-profit organizations have programs wherein a portion of your purchase goes toward an animal charity. For example, a new squeaky cat toy for my Jenny will help donate money toward the needy cats Best Friends Society Supports. For 26 years now, the San Francisco SPCA has held the SF SPCA Macy's Holiday Windows adoption center in the Macy's store in San Francisco. Last year, 325 cats and dogs were adopted through that event, but a recent email disclosed that this year adoptions are lagging.

A call has gone out for volunteers to help guide interested adopters and encourage the sidewalk "browsers" to come in and get hands-on experience with the adoptable cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens...learn more

Cat Picture of the Week: Sunny

Take a beautifully sunny cat with a disposition to match, combine him with a warm and loving woman, who finds him in a county shelter and brings him to his forever home, and you have the perfect match for this week's Cat Picture of the Week.

Sunny has lived in Barbara's home for about a year now, and from all indications, neither he nor Barbara could be happier. Barbara says that Sunny is the life of the party. She wrote, "He is the bouncy, energetic young one who slightly unsettles the middle-age cats, but always brings a smile to our faces. Such a joy!" It is this kind of attitude that turns cats from pets into family members, and Sunny fits the bill.
