Review: Cat Daddy, by Jackson Galaxy

Cat Daddy ReviewThe photo on the front of the Cat Daddy book cover in no way resembles the word picture Jackson describes of his appearance the first time he interviewed for "Animal Welfare Associate" with the Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV). He may still look a little rough around the edges, but he has a heart of gold where it comes to cats. Very few men and women have succeeded in beating the obstacles Jackson surmounted, especially to be able to rise to the heights of fame he receives now. However, I sincerely doubt that "fame" is Jackson Galaxy's motivation. Yes, it's a nice incentive, but I sincerely believe that Jackson's motivation is to help the cats of the world live in a much better place. He's that kind of man - a nice man - and I, for one, appreciate all he is doing for cats.

Asthma in Cats

Much like human asthma, feline asthma is an allergen-caused upper respiratory condition that causes distressed breathing. It is also called bronchitis or feline bronchial disease. Bronchial spasms cause the individual bronchi to constrict or tighten, and the resultant swelling of surrounding tissues puts the cat into a full-blown asthma attack. Often undiagnosed asthma attacks are assumed to be attempts to cough up hairballs. The posture is very similar as the cat crouches, leaning forward, and stretching his neck downward while coughing. If you suspect your cat has asthma, you should take your cat to your veterinarian for testing and diagnosis. Cat litter that creates dust when cats use it can exacerbate asthma symptoms, and even cause asthma attacks. As an asthma patient, myself I personally prefer the Tidy Cats Breeze Litter System, which utilizes small, hard pellets. I have also ordered Dr. Elsey's Respiratory Relief Silica Gel Litter to test on my cats, since Joey is suspected of having asthma, and Billy has a mild case of bronchitis.

Foreclosed Pets

In a former life when I was a real estate broker, I had a listing, a house that was vacant, except for the pregnant cat who had been left behind, and the resultant five kittens born under the wraparound porch of the southern colonial style house. Caring neighbors were feeding the cats, evidenced by a bag of cat food and full water bowl under the porch. My routine checks of my listings included visiting this house daily to bring extra food and a large bottle of water for the furry gang. Between myself and the neighbors, we were able to find a good home for the mom cat and a cat fosterer for the kittens.

Unfortunately, in today's shaky economy, more and more homes are being foreclosed, and often desperate or bitter homeowners leave their pets behind. Elizabeth Weintraub, About.com Guide to HomeBuying, wrote an excellent, sensitive article on the subject, Abandoned Foreclosure Pets. I urge everyone to read this article, as it may affect you or a neighbor's cats left behind.

Cat Picture of the Week: Filfil

Filfil is the first Cat of the Week for September - the month when we celebrate senior cats. Filfil is not only 17, but he is also a Tripod kitty. He has other health problems, and his human mom almost let him go a couple of weeks ago, but she says that he keeps coming back.

She says that she won't let him suffer needlessly, though, and will know when it's time to let him go. For now, though, Filfil enjoys his home in Dubai, and his mom often finds gecko and lizard tails wiggling in her flip-flops. Gotta love this cat! Learn more about Filfil, and then submit photos and story of your own senior cat.
