From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

It's been a stressful several days, as we've had both Joey and Jenny to our new veterinarian. Joey's appointment was a followup, and Jenny's was a brand new problem, as she had been hiding under my bed day and night since Monday. More on both of them next week. In the meantime, love your furkids and please give them the vet care thay need. They are with us for much too short a time, as it is.

The Importance of Vet Follow-up

My cat Joey, pictured here, had radioactive iodine therapy for hyperthyroidism in June, 2011. It is routine after this treatment to have the cat's thyroid values rechecked in 30 days, 90 days, and at six months. One reason is that there is a remote possibility that the cat will need the treatment again. A lesser possibility (maybe 5%), is that the cat will turn hypothyroid after the treatment. The latter happened with our Bubba, who also had the radioactive iodine therapy. Subsequently, we had to give him daily thyroxin, a thyroid supplement.

We were slightly late for the six month blood tests for Joey, as in December we were still settling into our new home. Thankfully, our former vet, Dr. Dietrich, had given me a call, reminding me that Joey was due for a re-check. I had no intention of... Read more

Minimizing Stress and Anxiety in Your Cat

Anyone who has suffered stress and anxiety knows the debilitating effects it can have on your health. Stress in cats acts much the same way, and not only can it exacerbate existing physical conditions, but it can lead to a number of problems often considered behavioral.

Stress and anxiety in cats can come from many sources, including environmental changes and emotional or physical stress. You will find that many of these areas overlap as we explore further.

The Feline-Human Bond
One aspect of the bond between humans and our cats is that as members of our family, we worry about our kitties when they are not feeling well. Another aspect is that we not only worry, we see that they get the best veterinary care we can afford. Learn more about the feline-human bond.

Cat Picture of the Week: Grissom

Grissom is a cute gray and white longhair kitten, about six months old in this photo. Kassia had lost an older cat two months prior, and felt the time was right for another cat about the same time as she found Grissom in a special shelter event. Even though the shelter was holding a $10 special event to help make room for more cats and kittens, Kassia had to pass an interview before being allowed to adopt. This is a sound shelter practice, in my opinion. Grissom was featured in the Adopted Shelter Kittens Show and Tell feature, where all the Cat Pictures of the Week will be chosen from for January. Once we have three Cats of the Week, I will be able to publish the 2012 Cat Picture of the Week Gallery.
