| | Managing the Care of a Diabetic Cat Image © Franny Syufy
It has been over a month since Billy was first diagnosed with diabetes. During that time he was also diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, confirmed with an electrocardiogram. My veterinary bills for this period have been almost $1,500, and I'm waiting to see how much of that my VPI Pet Insurance policy will reimburse. So far, I have converted my three male cats to a low carbohydrate canned food only diet, and recently started supplementing it with a mixture of partially raw chicken thighs and a commercial raw food supplement. I add a bit of low sodium chicken broth and mix it all up into a sort of kitty soup, and the boys thoroughly enjoy it. If Billy's next blood tests do not show substantial improvement, insulin injections will be inevitable. In the meantime, Billy seems to feel much better, and plays almost as hard as he sleeps. | Who Put the Nip in Catnip? That most cats go crazy over catnip is no secret. All four of our cats, from Jenny to Jaspurr, find their "kitten within" when presented with a new catnip toy or a recycled sock filled with catnip. It's sort of like the old "chicken and egg" conundrum. Did catnip get its name because cats are so nuts over it, or did they fall for the oldest marketing ploy in the world? Read the article, then vote in the ongoing poll. | Attention Seeking Behavior in Cats Cat caregivers sometimes complain about "behavior problems," when there are physical reasons for some of those problems. One example is a cats excessive vocalization: loud meowing or crying, sometimes accompanied by other attention-seeking behavior. Because causes for these behaviors can be either physical or emotional, or both, you need to do some homework on possible causes, so you can help your cat with his distress. Learn more about the various reasons for attention-seeking behavior in cats, and how you can help them. | Cat Picture of the Week: Chloe Image © Guest, Chris Piwowarski
Chris Piwowarski is a shelter volunteer, and naturally adopted Chloe, our Cat Picture of the Week, from a shelter after losing her 13 year old cat in 2008. Chloe is a special needs cat, and although Chris did not elaborate on the nature of her special needs, it could have something to do with her beautiful eyes, as blue-eyed white cats are often deaf. One thing is for sure: Chris and Chloe are bonded, and Chloe is a very lucky cat to have found such a loving forever home. | | | | Related Searches | | | | Featured Articles | | | | | | Sign up for more free newsletters on your favorite topics | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the About.com Cats newsletter.
