Buyer Beware - The Crimes, Lies, and Truth About Pet
 "Buyer Beware - The Crimes, Lies, and Truth About Pet Food," by Susan Thixton, is not an easy book to read, even for one whose work involves almost daily contact with the sorrows, even horrors of the loss of cats found among my readers.
When Susan lost her eight year old female Rottweiler, Sam, to bone cancer, and was told by her vet that the cancer was likely caused by chemical preservatives in the food Sam was eating, a fire burned within her that has never been quenched. That chemical was ethoxyquin, and the company which manufactured the cat food was, and still is, one of the major pet food companies. You'll learn much more about ethoxyquin, which still is used by some companies in pet foods and treats. You'll learn about many other ingredients which should be permanently banned from pet foods, and how you can protect your cats from toxic ingredients, governmental incompetence, and both greedy and conscientious pet food companies when after reading this review, you read Buyer Beware.

| Aggression Between Cats Sharing a Household
It is always with concern when we witness what seems to be angry aggression between cats who have been good buddies in the past. I saw a vivid example of redirected aggression one night awhile ago when our Jaspurr and Joey fought wildly after seeing a raccoon looking into the house through the slider to our deck. Scary, to say the least. Aggression between housemate cats comes in several forms, with associated causes, and it behooves us, their human companions, to fully understand these kinds of aggressive behavior so that we can take appropriate steps, when needed. Learn when to interfere and when to stand back and let them work it out. Cats have their own way of working out their "pecking order," as in play-fighting, and sometimes you just have to call "time out."

Miss Dolly, an eight year old Calico, is the fourth and last Cat Picture of the Week for July, 2012.

Miss Dolly is a very lucky cat to have been adopted by Bernadette, a shelter volunteer and fosterer, with multiple cats of her own. Dolly had so many medical problems that it is unlikely anyone else would have been willing to take her on. But Bernadette has had extensive dental work done on Miss Dolly's teeth, and her veterinarian treated her initial vomiting and diarrhea. The bad teeth lead to deafness, and Miss Dolly wears a bell on her collar so Bernadette can easily locate her inside the house. Laura White loves cats, and started by volunteering for a local cat rescue group at their Adoption Day Events at a PetSmart store.
