| | Judging by the number of emails I receive about them, and the huge amount of comments in the blog, When Kittens Get Sick, it seemed like a good topic this week. Also, speaking of emails, my address changed to cats@aboutguide.com several months ago, and now emails sent to the old address will bounce. Many more have inquired how to become involved with kitten fostering, a need which begged for an educational series. This article, Before You Volunteer to Foster Kittens and Cats gives you the basic considerations before entering this venture. Laura White loves cats, and started by volunteering for a local cat rescue group at their Adoption Day Events at a PetSmart store. One thing led to another, and since then, Laura has rescued and fostered countless litters of kittens. She enthusiastically allowed me to "pick her brain," and readers will be able to benefit from her experiences here. The photo shown here is of one of Laura's rescued kitten litters. Share Your Kitten Foster Stories Read the Primer | Share Your Foster Story | Fading Kitten Syndrome Most of us who have never worked in the rescue of pregnant cats or kitten fostering, have never heard of fading kitten syndrome, aka FKS. If we have had litters of kittens from our own cats, when one died suddenly with no warning, we grieved. If we caught the symptoms and took the kitten quickly to the veterinarian, it was either treated and recovered, or if it didn't recover, the veterinarian would often give us a label we could repeat, in case someone asked. Really, a label is all that Fading Kitten Syndrome is. It isn't a disease, per se, but a collection of symptoms, as are all "syndromes." Learn more about fading kitten syndrome, and file it away, even if you currently have no kittens. It may come in useful some day. | Minimizing Stress and Anxiety in Your Cat Anyone who has suffered stress and anxiety knows the debilitating effects it can have on your health. Stress in cats acts much the same way, and not only can it exacerbate existing physical conditions, but it can lead to a number of problems often considered behavioral. Stress and anxiety in cats can come from many sources, including environmental changes and emotional or physical stress. You will find that many of these areas overlap as we explore further. We will look at some of the causes of stress in cats, the symptoms, and how we can help our cat get back on an even keel, for better physical and emotional health. | Cat Picture of the Week: Groucho Our first Cat Picture of the Week for August is Groucho, a decidedly un-grumpy white cat with "Groucho-like" eyebrows. I'm not sure, though, if he can wiggle them like the famous comedian used to. photo © Taryn
A shelter cat adoptee about a year ago, Groucho is now two years old, and is the delight of the household.
