| | October has always been one of my family's favorite months. The cooler fall weather is refreshing after a long, hot summer, but the clincher is Halloween, and all that goes with it. I've started a special tradition for my younger readers this year: drawing Halloween cats pictures which parents can submit to this new Show and Tell. Have a wonderful week and hug your cats, no matter what their color. | | Cat Picture of the Week: Ozzie Photo Credit: © ozziemom
In 2000, Ozzie was a kitten in an animal shelter when Ozziemom walked in. She'd been afraid to adopt a black cat since losing her beloved Alex the year before, since the reminders of him might be too sad. Her fears were allayed the minute she laid eyes on Ozzie. He immediately rolled over and turned on the charm as only cats instinctively know how to do. Today, eleven years later, Ozzie is still wielding his tools of enchantment. Ozziemom is as smitten with him today as she was back then. Read more of Ozzie's story, then follow the link to see how you can submit your own black cat's photo and story to the Why I Love Black Cats Show and Tell feature. Your cat could also show up this month as Cat of the Week if your story and photo are as compelling as Ozzie's. | Fun Family Halloween Cats Project We're celebrating Black Cat Month in a big way this year. A brand new addition this year is a new Show and Tell Feature for kids' Halloween cats drawings. It is a family project because the children (ages 5 through 12) will create the drawings with or without parental help. Parents may show off their kids' Halloween drawings by scanning and uploading the drawings and filling out an easy form. The only firm rule is that a cat must be the main feature of the drawing (what would a a cats web site be without cats?). Black cats add extra Halloween fun, but are not required. Witches, spooks, hobgoblins, and Jack-O-Lanterns all add that Halloween touch. And if your cat is a bird-watcher, bats flying across a full moon are an added treat. I'll be creating a new picture gallery of the drawings as the entries arrive, and it will be featured prominently on this web site throughout October. Parents, your child's privacy will be protected, as the form only requires a first name and age. Your first name and last initial will also be requested. Get out those crayons, colored pens, and pencils, kids while your parents (or aunts and uncles or grandparents) check out the entry form for the Kids' Halloween Cats Drawings Show and Tell. | Cat Breed of the Week: Domestic Cats Domestic cats have always been my favorite breed, and all but one of the scores of cats who have been family members over the past five decades have been domestic cats (whether you call them alley cats, house cats, mixed breed, or moggies). The vast majority of my readers seem to share my love for domestic cats, judging by my emails and your response to various opportunities for photo Show and Tell on my site. We're in good company, folks. Interesting, more black cats are domestic cats than black cats in all the breeds combined. Additional Reading: | Black Cats Folklore Black cats have been both worshiped and vilified for centuries, due to their association, right or wrong, with witchcraft. Their fans are almost legion today, compared to some other colors or color patterns of cats, but their popularity probably has nothing to do with folklore, but simply with their stunning beauty.Learn more and perhaps enjoy a few chuckles over the complicated folklore surrounding black cats.
