International Pet Travel: Europe
I’ve always wanted to visit Europe. So steeped in history and romance, Italy in particular seems the perfect vacation spot. Alas, I’m not going to tell you about my experiences there nor those of my cats because we’ve yet to visit there. But this week on Animal Cafe, Edie Jarolim, our pet travel correspondent, talks with Diane Silver of To Dog with Love about her experiences there.
Many of you might know Diane better as the two-legged mom and caretaker for Cosmo, the Havanese. Yes, Cosmo got to visit Italy with Diane, twice! And apparently had a ball being there. Italy, it turns out, is incredibly dog friendly. Cosmo even went snowshoeing with Diane and had a blast running through the snow on the trails. Okay, maybe I’m a little jealous, I admit. And I don’t even like snow.

Planning for International Travel to Europe with Your Pet

Seriously, there’s a ton of stuff that needs to be taken care of before you’ll be ready or able to travel overseas to Europe with your dog. Firstly, you’ll need to see to your own needs, like getting a passport if you don’t already have one.
You’ll also need to see to your dog’s needs. You’ll need travel papers for your pet. Don’t procrastinate on this. Start finding out early, well before your planned trip, what travel requirements need to be made for your dog. The requirements differ between locations and if you’re not prepared, your trip could turn into a nightmare with your dog quarantined somewhere in a faraway country instead of at your side. (Yes, that can happen.) Diane talks about how to go about all of this in her interview. So make sure to listen in.
You’ll also want to make sure that your dog is up for a trip like this. Cosmo is an experienced traveler, having started with a trip to Chicago at the tender age of 14 weeks old. Diane worked diligently to get Cosmo used to his travel bag and make sure the bag is a place in which he is comfortable. But if your dog is a nervous traveler or is not healthy, you may want to rethink your plans.
