Cat of the Week: Honey
From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats
This Week's Cat
Honey
Honey grew from a small ball of dandelion fluff to a glorious cat with "middle-age" spread, under the loving care of Dianne. Honey also has an unusual trait going for her: she is a female red tabby, which although not as rare as male calicos, is still pretty special.

The December Cat Calendar
December is for holidays and keeping in touch with friends and loved ones. It's also a great month for snuggling with your cat in front of a crackling fire, particularly if your cat mirrors the colors of the flames. And of course we can't forget that December is red for the color of Christmas stockings and Santa's suit, as well as the color of the flames on Chanukkah candles.

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

Monday was a banner day for me, as I celebrated my 15th year writing about cats on this Website. No lesser an occasion was my J-Boys, Jaspurr and Joey's 10th birthday. My two kittens that I searched for long and hard in 2002, are now senior cats.

I was too busy setting up the RCA voting to do much partying, but I hope you'll join me now for some late celebrations.

Two Kittens Are Better Than One

In 2002, littermates Jaspurr and Joey came into my home and my heart. I had searched for several months for two kittens, and one of them had to be red. With the passing of our beloved Shannon in July of 2001, it was the first time since our marriage that we had not had at least one "Sunshine Boy." Because our remaining cat, Bubba, was a very spoiled senior cat, it took a lot of convincing before my husband would agree to the possibility. I finally convinced him that with two kittens, they could keep each other company, and Bubba would not feel threatened or annoyed.

Please join me for our week-long party, and learn why two kittens are better than one.

Review: EVO Turkey and Chicken Grain-Free Cat Food

When I bought this food to test for my cats, one of them couldn't wait, and tore the bag apart before I could even open it. Later, when I checked their feeding station, the EVO bowl was empty, and the bowl next to it was still half-full of another brand. Okay, my cats loved the taste of EVO. However, there are a a couple of reasons why I wouldn't recommend feeding this food to some cats. One of them is that, although Innova advertises it as low-calorie, the kcal/cup (caloric measurement) is much higher than a few other grain-free dry foods, so caregivers of obese cats should probably look elsewhere. Read my full review to learn more about EVO Turkey and Chicken Grain-Free Cat Food.

You've Gotta Be Smarter (Than the Cat)

This was one of the first articles I published circa 2/20/97, when I was the Cat Lovers Guide, and today, on my 15th "GUIDEiversary" I'm celebrating by sharing this article with my readers. The subjects of this article (Asa and Bubba) are both deceased now, romping together at the Rainbow Bridge, as I know their bond continues in another dimension. My writing style has changed somewhat since then, as has the look and feel of our web pages - we were known as "The Mining Company" back then. Our page colors were a puce green, and blogs were unheard of.

Are any of us actually smarter than our cats now? Bet me!

Cat of the Week: Coco
From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats
This Week's Cat
Coco
Coco was just a farm cat, matted and ornery, when she found Candace. She only wanted love and a forever home, and, eight years later, I think it's safe to say she got both!

From Franny Syufy, your Guide to Cats

While the RCA nominations are now closed, in less than a week the finalists voting will start. Lots more on the horizon, so stay tuned. Meantime, spend some bonding time with your kitties every day for a pick-me-up.

7 Ways We Bond With Our Cats

One immutable link among people who love cats is our lifelong bond with cats. In fact, that bond is so strong that it lasts beyond life itself. One of the strongest ways this bond presents itself is that our cats provide us with therapy when we need it most. Even the smallest thing, such as the way feel of a purring, vibrating warm body under a hand at night can bring on sleep, is therapy in only the way cats can give. In fact, cats are being used more and more lately as therapy animals in hospital settings, such as nursing homes.

Let's examine the 7 ways we bond with our cats in more detail. I suspect many readers will be murmuring "yes!" as the story unfolds.

Understanding Anesthesia for Cats

I wrote earlier that my 9 year-old Billy will be undergoing dental cleaning this month. He will have to be under anesthesia for this procedure, which causes me some concerns, as it does for other cat parents. The blood tests recommended by veterinarians can help to ameliorate certain worries, and should not be skipped in the interests of saving money.

A better understanding of some of the commonly-used types of anesthetics and analgesics (pain relievers), how they work, and their potential drawbacks, will help us make the best decisions when it comes to sedating our cats. Read more for a better understanding about anesthesia for cats.

Get Rid of Cat Fleas

Fleas are not only annoying, but they are nasty little critters that carry any number of "hitch-hikers" such as tapeworms and the Haemobartonellosis microorganism. I'm sure you'll agree with the importance of stopping flea infestations before they occur, for your cats' comfort and your own peace of mind. Learn more about getting rid of fleas on your cat. You'll both sleep better.
